Surrealist associative patterns in contemporary creative works

We shall dedicate an entire subchapter of the last part of our thesis to modern artists – inheritors of Surrealism – among whom we may find celebrities of our time, as well as young artists, at the beginning of their careers. Our goal is not to make a statistics of such names, but to simply mention them and try to elaborate some judgments on the works of some of them. We shall take a look at Ovidiu Avram’s work, very suggestive in picturing the surrealist element called the eternal woman through three mythological symbols: the female equestrian, the caryatid and the sibyl. His volcanic touch seems to lurk, waiting to create the woman at any time, unless woman hasn’t existed already. In fact Ovidiu Avram creates the woman, but differently from her first making out of Adam’s rib. He creates the woman by blending the abstract and the demonic, for her to become both the subject of veneration and the bone of contention.

Thus, the woman that Ovidiu Avram has created is not meant to kill loneliness, but to generate and deepen loneliness. She loses her attributes of lover, mother or wife and becomes a static object, exposed to all the body devouring eyes.

The surrealism of the woman in Ovidiu Avram’s paintings is expressed by the game of bringing together the mythological and the demonical, in an attempt to bring together, overlap and even interfuse the idea of veneration – devouring, thus suggesting a slight touch of clouded clarity.
Beyond all these there breaks through or burns silently woman’s loneliness, a loneliness turning upside down, for only one moment, the way of things, and the new way of things becomes primary creation which may chose man’s devouring eye.

Surrealist influences and Modern tendencies brings us closer to the end of our thesis. Throughout the subchapter called Surrealist influences we tried to highlight a part of these Surrealist influences, approaching them as true associative patterns of the Surrealism: Post- Breton Surrealism, Dream Art, Visionary Art, Neo-Surrealism, Magical Surrealism, Psychedelic Art, Fantastic Surrealism, Fantastic Art, Fantasy Art.
